Did the store employee have a right to make me pay for something I knocked over and broke?
I was at a gift shop which had fragile stuff and I happened to be clumsy. I knocked over a fragile glass antique and it broke! I was so embarrassed and I even said: “Oops I am so sorry.” And the young girl who worked there shaked her head and was being so rude about it and said: “WATCH IT!! NOW LOOK WHAT YOU DID!!! YOU ARE GOING TO PAY FOR THAT NOW!” And I said: “im sorry, It was an accident. I wasn’t touching it but I bumped it” and she still made me pay for it and I did and she said: “We rarely get those in stock so be more careful next time!” and she was so rude and being totally uncalled for. I mean, accidents happen just like spills in grocery stores! Its not like I purposely knocked the glass over and broke it! That will be different.
So was the store employee right to make me pay and get upset that I knocked over something that was fragile and broke it?
I don't know about the laws in your state, but on the whole, such signs CANNOT BE ENFORCED unless you PURPOSELY and/or RECKLESSLY broke the item.
The store employee was WRONG AND RUDE. If you wish to "make a case" of it, you could demand your money back. Otherwise your only other course of redress is to never shop there again and not recommend the store to others.
